How to remove floaters and ghost splats from a 3D Gaussian Splatting scene
A practical cleanup workflow for 3DGS captures: find floaters and near-transparent ghost splats, select them with filters, rings and region tools, and delete or fade them in the browser with the EVOVA Editor.

Why floaters happen
Gaussian Splatting training often leaves floaters (stray splats in empty space) and ghost splats (large, nearly transparent splats) around the subject, especially where the capture had few views, reflections or a moving background. They blur silhouettes, add file size and slow rendering.
Cleanup workflow in the EVOVA Editor
- Open https://app.evova.ai/editor and drop your PLY, SPZ, SOG, .splat or .ksplat file. No account is needed to edit.
- Switch to Splat edit mode and turn on Show Points (X). Areas with scattered dots but almost no color are transparent ghost splats or noise.
- For stray clusters in empty space, select them with the rectangle (T), lasso (L) or polygon (P) tool and press Delete.
- For ghost splats, select a region (or everything with A), open the selection filter, keep only low-opacity splats (for example opacity ≤ 0.1) with "Filter current selection", check the result, then delete.
- To pick individual splats, turn on Show Rings (V). With visibility rings, clicking a visible ring selects exactly that splat; switch the vis toggle off to see and select every ring, including invisible ones.
- Where splats trained too faint or too strong, use the Adjust tab (Y) with opacity − or opacity + instead of deleting.
- Undo with Ctrl+Z, then export to PLY, SPZ, SOG, .splat, .ksplat or USD, or save and publish.
Tips
- Toggle Show Selected (Z) to judge the scene without the yellow selection highlight.
- Brush tools can target only visible splats (Alpha), a surface layer (Depth) or everything under the brush (Projection), so you can clean hidden splats behind a surface in one pass.
- Areas lumped into a few large splats show sparse dots; the Subdivide tab can split them for finer detail.
- Version history keeps your recent saves, so you can restore an earlier state if a cleanup went too far.
FAQ
How do I delete floaters in Gaussian Splatting?
Open the splat in the EVOVA Editor, switch to Splat edit mode, select the floaters with the rectangle, lasso or polygon tool (or filter the selection by low opacity for ghost splats) and press Delete. It works in the browser without an account.
How do I find nearly invisible ghost splats?
Turn on Show Points (X) to see splat centers: dots with almost no color are ghost splats. Then keep only low-opacity splats with the selection filter, or turn off visibility rings to see and select every splat.
